What is psychosynthesis counselling?


Psychosynthesis is a therapeutic approach where counsellor and client focus not only on the client’s presenting issues, exploring their past and present situation, but they also look at the future and what is trying to emerge for the client.

It is a type of counselling that sees the person as a whole: body, mind and feelings; it has a holistic approach that does not only focus on the past but also in the present, explores our strengths and potential alongside the challenges and problems that we want to address.

Psychosynthesis gives emphasis on finding meaning and purpose in life and the therapeutic process works around the client potentials to discover and develop their inner strength and their own skills to live the lives they wish to live.

Psychosynthesis was developed by Roberto Assagioli, an Italian psychiatrist, who developed his theory between 1888 and 1974. His background training in medicine and psychiatry included psychoanalysis. However, Assagioli’s theory was influenced by many spiritual and philosophical such as the Russian esotericist P.D. Ouspensky, Carl Jung, Martin Buber, Viktor Frankl and Alice Bailey, to name a few. Psychosynthesis is an integrative model, which welcomes and utilises different methods and techniques from other approaches and cultures, with the aim not only to enrich the client’s personal development but also with the intention to integrate the different parts of the person into a stronger, more conscious ‘whole’.

In Assagioli’s words: “Psychosynthesis is a method of psychological development and self-realization for those who refuse to remain the slave of their own inner phantasms or of external influences, who refuse to submit passively to the play of psychological forces which is going on within them, and who are determined to become the master of their own lives.”

 

Who is Psychosynthesis for and how could it help you?

Psychosynthesis is for everyone who, in a situation of discomfort or difficulty, wants to:

  • Understand why they feel/behave the way they do in certain situations and find the tools to use past experiences in a more constructive way
  • Find a better balance and the resources to improve the present and live a better future
  • Learn more about who they really are (we are not only our wounds and our past experiences .. we are so much more than that!)

The main 3 stages of the psychosynthesis journey are: “Know yourself, own yourself, transform yourself”.

There is also a transpersonal aspect in this kind of therapy which means it goes beyond addressing the emotional and intellectual side. Psychosynthesis takes a holistic approach and aims to address the client’s mental, physical, social, emotional creative and intellectual needs to facilitate healing and growth.
